I’ll be honest: “recently renovated” can mean a lot of things. Sometimes it’s a new coat of paint on a bench. At Alhambra Park in Mt. Pleasant, it meant something else entirely. When my family pulled up, the space felt bigger, brighter, and more open than I expected. And then we found the playground, the trees, and those views. We stayed a lot longer than we planned.

What Just Got a Makeover

Alhambra Park sits alongside Alhambra Hall, a beloved historic event venue in Mt. Pleasant’s Old Village neighborhood right on Charleston Harbor. The two are connected, and last year both went through a nearly year-long, $4.8 million renovation by the Town of Mount Pleasant.

The renovation preserved what made the space special in the first place: the ancient oak trees, the open lawns, the harbor breezes. Then it layered in everything the park had been missing, including fully updated infrastructure, new sidewalks, accessible restrooms, and a brand-new playground that’s turned heads across the region.

A Playground Built for Every Kid

The playground equipment is newly updated and genuinely works for a range of ages. They kept the swings, which are still fantastic. But the first thing that caught my kids’ attention wasn’t the slides or the climbing structure. It was the animal scavenger hunt built right into the equipment. Hidden figures tucked throughout the playground had them on a focused mission, scrambling everywhere trying to spot every single one. It’s such a smart touch that gives kids an extra layer of purpose beyond just running and jumping.

There's an animal scavenger hunt built right into the playground equipment — kids love hunting for all the hidden figures.

What also struck me was the thoughtfulness of the inclusive design. The Town of Mount Pleasant built this playground from the ground up with accessibility in mind: smooth pour-in rubber surfaces for mobility devices, wide ramps, sensory-friendly equipment, interactive panels, and award-winning swings designed so children and caregivers can make genuine eye-to-eye contact during play. The playground has earned certification as a National Demonstration Site for Inclusivity and Physical Activity, and honestly, it shows. Kids of all abilities can play together here in a way that feels natural rather than separated.

The park never felt chaotic or hard to navigate. It’s the kind of space where you can actually see your kids from wherever you’re sitting, which is a genuine relief when you’re managing multiple ages.

The Oak Trees Are the Real Show-Stopper

My son made a beeline for the trees the second we arrived, and I don’t blame him. The massive oak trees at Alhambra are genuinely built for climbing, with low branches and all the character you could want. Watching him scramble up was one of those simple kid-joy moments that made the whole trip worth it.

When the Town renovated the park, they made a deliberate choice to remove outdated playground features in order to preserve the existing trees rather than the other way around. The result is a park that feels anchored in time, like it belongs there. That history is real: this site along the harbor has served as a community gathering place for generations of Mt. Pleasant residents, going back further than the historic hall itself.

Beyond the trees, there’s plenty of open lawn for kids to run. The wide green spaces give everyone room to spread out, and there’s real shade here, not just a single tree casting a shadow on one bench. It’s the kind of place that actually supports a full picnic, not just a quick visit.

Tip: The shade at Alhambra is plentiful and genuine. Bring a blanket, snacks, and a cooler and plan to stay a while. This is a great park for a laid-back afternoon rather than a quick in-and-out visit.

Harbor Breezes and Boat Watching

One of my favorite things about this park is the breeze. There’s a steady cross-breeze off the Intracoastal Waterway that makes even a warm summer day feel more manageable. We like to watch for boats passing on the water, and it gets surprisingly entertaining when a bigger vessel comes through. It’s one of those small pleasures that makes an afternoon at the park feel a little bit more special than the usual.

The playground sits across the street from Alhambra Hall itself, which has panoramic views of Charleston Harbor and a new outdoor patio after its own renovation. The views from the grounds are genuinely beautiful, and even a quick walk over to take them in adds something to the visit.
