When the family first walked into Vampire Penguin in Mount Pleasant, we weren’t totally sure what to expect. Was it shaved ice? Ice cream? Some sort of trendy dessert spot that looked great on Instagram but wouldn’t actually live up to the hype?
After one bite, though, my kids were hooked.
Vampire Penguin specializes in “shaved snow,” which is very different from the crunchy snow cones most of us grew up with. The texture is incredibly soft and fluffy — almost somewhere between shaved ice, ice cream, and cake. It melts instantly in your mouth and somehow feels both light and rich at the same time.
If your family loves trying fun dessert spots around Charleston, this one is definitely worth adding to the list.
What Makes Vampire Penguin Different?
The biggest surprise for us was the texture. Calling it shaved ice honestly doesn’t even feel accurate. Instead of hard ice with syrup poured over it, the flavored snow is shaved into thin, fluffy ribbons that already have flavor built in.
The result is creamy, airy, and dessert-like in a way that feels very different from a traditional snow cone.
The menu has a huge variety of signature creations along with build-your-own options, so everyone in the family can find something they like. Between the toppings, sauces, fresh fruit, cookie crumbles, and flavored snow choices, my kids took longer deciding what to order than they did eating it.

Our Favorite Flavors
We decided to share a few different flavors so everyone could try something different, and that was definitely a good plan.
We ordered:
- Strawberry Cheesecake
- Coconut
- S’mores
Out of all three, Strawberry Cheesecake was the clear favorite with my crew. It had a rich cheesecake flavor without being overwhelmingly sweet, and the combination of the fluffy snow texture with the toppings made it feel more like a dessert than just a frozen treat.
The Coconut flavor was lighter and super refreshing — perfect for a hot Charleston afternoon.
The S’mores option was definitely the richest of the three and felt more indulgent with all the chocolate and toppings layered in.
One thing we noticed quickly: the portions are generous. Sharing was definitely the right move for our family, especially since everyone wanted bites of each flavor anyway.
Why Families Will Love It
Beyond the desserts themselves, Vampire Penguin is just a fun family outing spot.

Kids love being able to customize toppings and flavors, and the desserts are colorful enough to immediately grab their attention without feeling overly gimmicky. It also works well for families because there’s enough variety that picky eaters and adventurous eaters can usually both find something they’ll enjoy.
It’s also the kind of place that naturally slows everyone down for a little while. We ended up hanging out longer than expected, comparing favorites and stealing bites from each other’s bowls.
A few things families should know before visiting:
- These treats melt pretty quickly in the Charleston heat.
- Portions are very shareable.
- The menu has lots of options, so expect kids to need a few extra minutes to decide.
- It’s a fun stop after the beach, dinner, or a day exploring Mount Pleasant.
Is Vampire Penguin Worth Trying?
Absolutely — especially if your family likes trying new dessert spots beyond the usual ice cream routine.
Vampire Penguin is different enough to stand out while still being approachable for kids and families. The fluffy shaved snow texture alone makes it worth trying at least once, and the huge variety of flavors means there’s a good chance everyone will find a favorite.
For our family, the Strawberry Cheesecake will definitely be the reason we go back.
