With Charleston’s sunny days, the best way to stay cool is by heading to one of the city’s free splash pads. Whether you’re a local or just visiting, these splash zones are perfect for kids to beat the heat, have fun, and make a splash without spending a dime.

1. Waterfront Park – Downtown Charleston

What’s Fun:
Waterfront Park’s “Pineapple Fountain” is one of Charleston’s most iconic water features, and it’s perfect for children to run through. The fountains are shallow, making it safe for little ones to cool off in.

The surrounding park is a great spot to relax and enjoy the views of the waterfront while the kids get soaked. This splash pad has been a Charleston favorite for three decades. My kids love this particular fountain when we are downtown on hot summer days.
There is also an ice cream counter right across the street that pairs perfectly with soaked kids!
Parking: Street parking is available around the park, but it’s metered. You can also find parking in nearby garages such as the Broad Street Garage or The Parking Garage at 99 Wentworth St. Be sure to check for time restrictions. You may also walk to the park from nearby accommodations or tourist spots.
Bathrooms: There are public restrooms available in the park’s nearby buildings. However, they’re not located directly next to the fountain, so a quick walk is necessary.
Lunch Spots Nearby: After playing in the fountains, grab a bite at Fleet Landing Restaurant & Bar (186 Concord St.), offering kid-friendly options and scenic views of the harbor. Alternatively, Callie’s Hot Little Biscuit (476 ½ King St.) serves up delicious Southern biscuits perfect for a casual lunch.

Address: 1 River Landing Drive, Charleston, SC
What’s Fun: Daniel Island Waterfront Park offers a beautifully designed spray fountain, perfect for kids who love to splash around. While this isn’t a massive water playground, its smaller size makes it ideal for toddlers or younger children who are just learning to play in water. The park also offers swings, green space, and views of the river. Waterfront Park is our most frequented splash pad.

I have a 6-year-old and a 2-year-old, and this is the perfect spot for both ages. They can run around and play soccer in the open green space located right beside the splash pad or play on the playground that is across the path if they want a drier activity. The proximity of the field, splash pad, and playground makes it easy to keep an eye on both kids.
