Inside: A local Charleston mom shares her family’s favorite things to do on Sullivan’s Island.

A day on Sullivan’s Island is one of the easiest and most rewarding family outings in the Charleston area. With a mix of laid-back beaches, walkable streets, great food, and kid-friendly spots to explore, you can fill an entire day without ever feeling rushed.

A day on Sullivan's Island: things to do with kids

Starting the Day: Easy Sulliva’s Island Beach Access & What to Expect

Sullivan’s Island is known for its natural, less-commercial feel. There are no big resorts or boardwalks—just beach paths (called “stations”) that lead you straight onto wide, open sand.

Walking to the beach at Sullivan's Island

For families, Stations 21–28 are especially convenient because they’re close to restaurants, shops, and parking.

What to know before you go:

  • No public beachfront bathrooms like larger county parks—plan ahead
  • Street parking is free, but fills up quickly in warmer months
  • Bring everything you need: water, snacks, shade, and chairs

Restrooms on Sullivan’s Island (Important for Families)

Because Sullivan’s Island keeps a more natural feel, restroom access is limited—but manageable with a little planning.

Best options:

  • Stith Park – This small playground park in the center of the island has public restrooms, making it a key stop for families
  • Restaurants along Middle Street (like those listed below) will allow restroom use if you’re dining or grabbing something

A good strategy is to park near Middle Street, so you’re within walking distance of both food and bathrooms.

Morning Beach Time: Sand, Shells & Tidal Pools

The beach here is perfect for kids—soft sand, gentle waves, and lots of space to spread out.

Tip: Check tide charts before you go—low tide is the best time for exploring.

Sullivan's Island shells

At low tide, Sullivan’s Island becomes especially fun:

  • Shallow tidal pools form along the shoreline
  • Kids can spot tiny fish, crabs, and shells
  • The hard-packed sand makes it great for running and playing

My kids love hunting for sand dollars on the sandbars at low tide, so we plan our day around it. We also love bringing non-toxic watercolor paints to decorate our shells—it’s an easy activity, and they can be rinsed off and returned when the kids are done.

Midday Break: Lunch Spots the Whole Family Will Love

When everyone is ready for a break from the sun, head over to Middle Street.

Top family-friendly restaurants on Sullivan’s Island:

  • Poe’s Tavern
A casual favorite inspired by Edgar Allan Poe. Known for burgers, sandwiches, and a relaxed outdoor vibe that works well with kids. I love their fish tacos, but the burgers are always a crowd favorite.
  • The Obstinate Daughter
A little more elevated but still welcoming. Great for families who want pizza, pasta, and fresh coastal dishes.
  • Station 22
A classic beachy spot with Southern favorites like fried chicken and shrimp. Easy, approachable, and close to the beach.
  • The Co-op
With delicious sandwiches and a kid-friendly menu, The Co-op is our usual lunch spot. They also serve breakfast if you make it out early. My go-to is the California Turkey, and my husband always picks the Italian. The kids menu has classics like PB&J, grilled cheese, and ham or turkey sandwiches. And if you’re needing a refresher, they have rotating frosé options for adults.

Sweet Treat Stop: Ice Cream Break

No beach day is complete without ice cream.

Beardcats Gelato

Beardcat’s Sweet Shop: A must-stop for families! They offer ice cream, candy, and nostalgic treats that kids love. It’s right in the heart of the island, making it an easy post-lunch reward. While the kids stick with chocolate, my favorite is the Biscoff—this is one stop we never skip on a Sullivan’s day.

Afternoon Play: Park Time & Exploring Sullivan’s Island

After lunch, let the kids burn off energy at Stith Park. Here’s our Kidding Around Review of Stith Park.

A shaded playground with climbing structures, swings, and open space. It’s a perfect reset spot between beach sessions—and again, it has those important restrooms. This park has been newly renovated to accommodate more ages. My kids love it—the ship is my son’s favorite, while my daughter heads straight for the little playhouse. You can also take a break for tennis or pickleball at the nearby courts.

End the Day at Fort Moultrie: A Hands-On History Experience

Fort Moultrie

This is the top history stop for families. Kids can walk through different versions of the fort—from the Revolutionary War all the way to World War II. It’s not just one building—it’s a timeline they can move through.

The site is open 9 am–5 pm and is free for kids under 15.

Why kids love it:

  • Real cannons and bunkers to explore
  • Wide open spaces to run safely
  • Cool underground areas and old military rooms
  • Views of the water and ships passing by
