If you ask my son Cade what he wants for dinner, the answer is always the same: Grit Counter. Every single time, without hesitation. After enough trips to count, I completely understand why.

It’s tucked right behind the North Charleston Coliseum at 3438 W. Montague Ave., and it has become our family’s most-requested restaurant in all of Charleston — not just the most convenient, not just the closest, but genuinely our favorite. The food is that good. And the fact that it’s a 30-second walk from the venue on event nights is almost unfair in the best possible way.

The Pre-Event Strategy That Actually Works

Here is the reality of going to an event at the North Charleston Coliseum: parking is already a project. Adding a restaurant reservation or a drive across town to that equation can turn a fun family night into a stress fest. Grit Counter solves that problem completely.

Whether you’re heading to a weekend South Carolina Stingrays game, a Saturday matinee of Disney On Ice, or an early PAW Patrol Live show, Grit Counter is right there. You park once, eat a genuinely great meal, and walk to the venue with full bellies and no one losing their mind. No overpriced arena hot dogs. No rushing. No regrets.

Counter service keeps things moving fast without feeling chaotic. You order at the counter, find a table in the spacious indoor dining room or grab a spot on the patio, and the food comes out quickly. It actually delivers on the fast-casual promise instead of just slapping the label on a slow restaurant.

What My Kids Order Every Time

My son Hollis orders the chicken nuggets and French fries, and the first time it arrived at our table I genuinely did a double take. This is not a tiny, token kids portion. The size is much bigger than you’d expect — big enough that there are always extra fries making their way around the table. That alone is a win in my book.

Cade goes straight for the grit bowl: grilled chicken over grits. He has never once wavered. It’s one of those simple combinations that just works, and the grits themselves are what make the difference. You can tell they’re made well. The texture is right. The flavor is there. When a kid orders the same thing every single visit without hesitation, that’s all the review you need.

The Grit Flights Are the Real Star

Cade also loves the grit flights, and this is where Grit Counter really earns its name. You choose three grit flavors from a rotating list that includes Smoked Gouda, Smoked Tomato, Pimento Cheese, Jalapeño Cheddar Cheese, “Red Rice,” Peaches and Cream, Grit of the Day, Bacon, and Plain. Three small bowls show up at your table, and what follows is the most fun your family has had with a side dish in a long time.

I will say this upfront: I know peach grits or coconut grits sound like a strange idea. I had my doubts too. They are surprisingly, genuinely good. The sweet-savory combination works in a way that makes you trust this kitchen a lot more than you did walking in. And the savory options — Smoked Gouda, Pimento Cheese, Jalapeño Cheddar — are exactly as satisfying as they sound.

If your table cannot agree on one grit flavor, order the flight. Let everyone try everything. It’s the move.

What the Grown-Ups Are Eating

I rotate between two bowls depending on what I’m in the mood for. When I want something bold and deeply Southern, I get the Self-Respecting Southerner: fried chicken, “Red Rice” grits, collard greens, and hot honey. It earns that name. When I want something a little different, I go for the grilled chicken bowl with Peaches and Cream grits, Smoked Gouda Mornay, roasted corn, dried cherries, and fried hominy. That combination should not work as well as it does. It absolutely does.

Smash burger with cheesy grit ball on top at Grit Counter in North Charleston SC

My husband gets the smash burger, and hands down it is our favorite burger in town. Full stop. It comes with a cheesy grit ball right on the burger, which sounds like an unusual call until you taste it and immediately wonder why every burger doesn’t come with one. It’s rich, it’s satisfying, and every other smash burger suddenly feels like it’s missing something.

The shrimp and grits is also worth a spot at your table if you have the capacity. Classic Lowcountry done well — which is saying something in Charleston, where the bar is high.

The Sides You Should Not Skip

A few things we have learned to always order: the fried Brussels sprouts are one of my personal favorites on the entire menu. Perfectly crispy, not at all bitter, the kind of vegetable that skeptics eat without complaint and then quietly reach for more. The pimento cheese hush puppies are exactly what they sound like and exactly as good as you’re hoping. Order both.

For dessert: the sweet potato bread pudding is worth saving room for. And if the Banana Pudding Sweet Corn Soft Serve is available, try it. The sweet corn base is lighter than you expect, and it’s extremely good.

Tip: Grit Counter has a full bar, so parents can order a drink while everyone settles in. On a night out with kids, that small detail makes a bigger difference than you’d think.
