SEWE with Kids: Why Families Love Charleston’s Wildlife Festival

Posted on |

If your family loves animals, outdoor fun, and experiences that feel special without being overwhelming, SEWE is one event you don’t want to skip. The Southeastern Wildlife Exposition takes over downtown Charleston each winter, and while it’s well known for art and conservation, it’s also packed with kid-friendly activities and unforgettable moments.

Check SEWE out February 13-15th, 2026 in Charleston, SC.

From dogs flying off docks to birds soaring overhead, SEWE is the kind of festival where kids stay engaged and parents feel good about what they’re experiencing. Whether you’re popping in for a few hours or planning a full day downtown, this guide breaks down the best family-friendly activities, kid zones, and helpful tips to make your visit smooth and fun.

Southeastern Wildlife Exposition

What is SEWE?

SEWE, short for the Southeastern Wildlife Exposition, is one of Charleston’s largest annual events celebrating wildlife, nature, and conservation. It’s held each winter in downtown Charleston and spreads across Marion Square, Brittlebank Park, and the Gaillard Center.

Families will find live animal demonstrations, interactive conservation exhibits, and plenty of opportunities for kids to learn through watching, touching, and cheering. While SEWE has a strong focus on art and outdoor heritage, there’s a surprising amount for kids to enjoy, making it a great option for a family day in the city.

Family-Friendly & Kid Activities at SEWE

One of Charleston’s busiest and most family-friendly festivals is coming to downtown, and we’ve put together a list of activities you won’t want to miss. Whether your kids love animals, hands-on learning, or just running around outside, there’s something here for everyone.

Kids Zones & Play Areas

Kids Zone at Brittlebank Park

Designed with children in mind, the Kids Zone at Brittlebank Park typically includes inflatable bounce houses, slides, fun games, and sometimes even a small petting zoo. It’s a great spot for younger kids to burn off energy and soak up the festival atmosphere.

Parents can usually purchase activity wristbands on site, but even without one, Brittlebank Park’s playground is a win. My kids love this playground, so there’s still plenty of fun to be had without spending extra.

Wildlife Demos & Educational Shows

Center for Birds of Prey Demos

Live raptor flight demonstrations featuring falcons, hawks, owls, and more take place at Marion Square. These shows are both educational and exciting, and watching birds soar overhead is always a crowd favorite for kids.

Busch Wildlife Sanctuary Live Shows

These presentations often feature live animals and focus on wildlife education and conservation. Shows are commonly held at the Gaillard Center and offer a nice indoor break if the weather is chilly or rainy.

Conservation Demos

Some conservation partners, like the Turtle Survival Alliance, offer hands-on learning experiences that may include live animals. My kids love hands-on learning, so anything they can safely touch or hold usually becomes the highlight of the day.

Fun Spectator Events

DockDogs Competitions

Watch athletic dogs race, jump off docks, and compete in long-jump contests. Kids love cheering for their favorite dogs, and it’s hard not to get caught up in the excitement.

Purina Pro Plan Disc Dog Performances

These high-energy frisbee routines, usually held at Marion Square, are fast-paced and easy for kids to enjoy, even if they only stop to watch for a few minutes.

Interactive & Educational Opportunities

Kids for Conservation Programs & Art Displays

SEWE’s Kids for Conservation initiative invites kids to express their creativity while learning about wildlife conservation. Children can see artwork created by other kids and get inspired to participate in future years.

Junior Duck Stamp & Youth Art Contests

Kids who enjoy drawing or animals can learn more about wildlife art and conservation through SEWE’s annual youth art contests and displays.

Hands-On Learning

Some years include interactive conservation booths, wildlife habitat exhibits, and educational partners offering activities ranging from animal facts to nature-based play. These areas are perfect for curious kids who love to ask questions and explore.

Ticket & Participation Tips

  • Children 10 and under are admitted free when with a ticketed adult for most general admission areas.
  • Some specific demonstrations or activity zones might require separate entry or wristbands — particularly inflatables or special shows.
  • Online tickets are closed, but you can purchase tickets in person at several locations for the event right up until the event ends. Here’s where you can purchase SEWE tickets.

Tips for Families Visiting SEWE

Bring snacks, water, and sunscreen since much of SEWE takes place outdoors in parks and open spaces. Plan to move between Brittlebank Park, Marion Square, and the Gaillard Center, as each location offers different kid-friendly highlights. Arrive early for popular demonstrations like the Birds of Prey shows, since viewing areas can fill up quickly.

If you’ve taken your kids to SEWE before, we’d love to hear what they enjoyed most. And if this is your first year, bookmark this guide and get ready for a fun, wildlife-filled family day in Charleston.
